Canada to Further Provide PGWP Extension

During the global pandemic, the Canadian government introduced a temporary public policy to help international graduates extend their Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP).

Recently, the Canadian immigration minister tweeted to announce that the government is planning to re-introduce this public policy, which will benefit those who have an expiring PGWP.

As per the update by Fraser, PGWP will now be available to all permit holders with an expiration date post-September 20, 2021. In addition, it ll allow certain graduates to apply for an additional work permit and extend their stay in Canada.

The minister tweeted on June 24, "We re now extending post-graduate work permits to international graduates whose permits expired or will expire between September 20, 2021, and December 31, 2022."

PGWP Extension Policy Updates

Due to the impact of a pandemic on international students and Canada s post-secondary sector, temporary policy changes have been introduced for the below-mentioned PGWP holders:

  • whose permits expired or will expire between September 20th, 2021 and December 31, 2022
  • who had lost their status and were still in Canada on temporary status
  • who had applied for or qualified to restore their status to apply for a PGWP extension

Policies like this reflect Canada s consistent efforts to retain international students. Canada has been facing a labour shortage, and with more than one million job vacancies, the Canadian economy relies on immigrants and international graduates as key sources for its post-pandemic recovery.
