IRCC Extends Temporary Distance

During the Covid-19 pandemic, various distance learning measures were in place to allow international students pursue online programs abroad while remaining eligible for PGWP.

With the new school year approaching, the IRCC is creating a transition period for those distance learning measures. The IRCC consulted the Canadian education stakeholders, provinces, territories regarding these measure and have extended the measures to August 31, 2023.

However, the IRCC has issued a statement on their website, " As we transition back to pre-pandemic requirements, we encourage international students to come back to Canada. A transition period is available for those who may need some time to do so."

The extension of distance learning measures will have an impact on the programs starting from September 2022 to August 2023. Specifically, the measures will be applicable:

  • To remain eligible for a PGWP, not more than 50% of the credits earned will be completed outside Canada
  • Study programs completed online from outside Canada starting on Sep 2023, will be deducted from the overall future PGWP length
